What is a
CoolGuard cover? The innovative CoolGuard cover inhibits swimming pool algae, reflects the sun’s heat and saves money, time, water and energy usage.
The product has an opaque light blue top surface and a black underside. It is this combination that gives a CoolGuard blanket the ability to provide a variety of benefits to the pool owner.
The CoolGuard swimming pool bubble cover material is sold in roll form to fabricators around the world for commercial and domestic use.
The durable 500 micron pool cover materials used for EnergyGuard, CoolGuard and Sol+Guard are formulated for climate conditions in various continents of the world depending on UV (ultra violet) weathering intensity.
The Sol+Guard and EnergyGuard materials are supplied in two UV formulations: one for areas up to 140 kLys/yrs (Kilolangley years) and one for up to 180kLys/yrs. CoolGuard is supplied for areas up to 180kLys/yrs. The additives we use combine weather and chemical resistant pigments with high performance light, weather and chemical stabilisation. The additives are non-toxic and registered in Australia, Canada, China, EU, Japan, Korea, Philippines and USA.
Inhibit Algae Growth
The CoolGuard cover inhibits algae growth in outdoor and indoor swimming pools. A Plastipack CoolGuard cover will block the light from entering the water, therefore stopping photosynthesis and inhibiting algae growth.
Research and scientific tests proved that the CoolGuard pool blanket inhibits algae growth even without chemical treatment.

Inhibit algae growth
Tests prove that the CoolGuard cover works The pools in the images were both tested for ten days with no chemical treatment, no filtration and with simulated use. The pool shown in the left hand image had a standard solar gain cover and soon went green due to algae growth. The image on the right shows a pool with the Plastipack CoolGuard cover with no algae growth. The test was continued for two months and this pool still remained clear of algae when the test period ended.

Winter Pool Cover
The CoolGuard cover can be used all year. A test in the UK proved that it has
many benefits as a winter pool cover. A pool was covered with a CoolGuard
cover and a woven mesh debris cover from October 2008 to April 2009. No
winter pool chemicals were used. The water was clear of algae after the 6
month period.
A pool owner will save many hours of pool preparation time by not having to filter, backwash and vacuum the pool, as well as saving money on chemicals and electricity usage.

The colour white is known to reflect the sun’s heat in a very efficient way.
Plastipack has carried out research and produced an opaque reflective light blue colour with similar characteristics.
The sun’s heat is reflected away from the surface of a CoolGuard cover and allows the water surface area directly under the cover to stay cool and refreshing for you to enjoy.
The CoolGuard pool blanket will provide a thermal barrier to prevent the absorption of the sun’s energy.

Reduce Filtration/Pump Time by up to 50%
Filtration time can be cut by up to 50% when algae growth is inhibited. This
will greatly reduce your electricity usage.
Filtration will still be required to remove dirt/impurities from the pool and to
circulate the water. A 50% reduction is achievable with regular pool use/bathing
loads. If the pool is heavily used there will need to be more filtration.
Reduce Chemical Consumption by up to 60%
You can reduce chemical usage because the CoolGuard cover inhibits algae
growth and eliminates water evaporation.
A CoolGuard cover will provide cost savings by using less chlorine because
algae growth will be inhibited by physical means rather than chemical means.
The CoolGuard cover also reduces chemical degradation from photolysis. About
90% of chlorine consumed by outdoor pools is lost due to photolysis reaction.
Additional cost savings will be made by using less pH plus/pH minus to correct
any pH imbalance caused by algae.
All chemical levels and treatment should be maintained at the manufacturers
recommended level.

With a CoolGuard pool cover you will be able to eliminate water evaporation
by over 98%, thus greatly reducing your water consumption and your water
charges, as well as saving a vital natural resource. Plastipack carried out research, in collaboration with the Brighton and London Metropolitan Universities, which proved that the evaporation loss in the UK for an average sized pool, 4m x 8m, is approximately 32,000 litres per year. This figure is considerably higher
for hotter climates and windy conditions.

You can reduce your pool heating costs because a CoolGuard cover will eliminate evaporation and greatly reduce heat radiation. Plastipack’s heat retention tests carried out in collaboration with the Brighton and London Metropolitan Universities, showed conclusive energy savings of over 50%.
This applied to oil, gas, electric heater or heat pump usage. Where solar heating is used, it is possible to invest in up to half the amount of panels normally required for a pool without a cover.
